MedicalCity@enstek set to be the prime education centre in medicine for the region
A medical city that will locate the entire medical and health industry value chain within a 528-acre development at Bandar Enstek is set to be the region's prime education centre in medicine. About 162 acres are earmarked for the first phase of the MedicalCity@enstek will be developed at an estimated RM 1.1 billion which is to be completed in 5 years.
Developed by TH Properties Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lembaga Tabung Haj and TSR Capital Berhad, the MedicalCity@enstek will house a university hospital, medical health research centre, medical complex, commercial centre, convention centre, hotels and students hostels under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) model.
The MedicalCity@enstek will be positioned as the centre for the development of biotechnology in bio-medical, bio-pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. It will also be a referral centre for medical, pharmaceutical and related biotechnology industries.
Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of the MedicalCity@enstek. The signatories of the MOU were Syed Mohamed Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of TH Properties while Tengku Datuk Mustapha Bin Tengku Mohamed, Managing Director signed on behalf of TSR Capital.
In a briefing to the Prime Minister, Encik Ismee Ismail, CEO and Group Managing Director of Lembaga Tabung Haji, said the MedicalCity@enstek will provide a platform to produce more medical professionals at all levels and opportunities for international collaboration in R&D and manufacturing, given Malaysia's rich biodiversity.
"The MedicalCity@enstek will also showcase Islam Hadhari in promoting human capital development and address the shortage of medical personnel, especially Bumiputras and Muslims. It will also leverage on biotechnology as the new engine of growth for the country. "Capitalizing on its strategic location to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Low Cost Carrier Terminal, the MedicalCity@enstek will also be focussing on health tourism as a source of foreign exchange for the country," said En Ismee.
Bandar Enstek is strategically located just 8 minutes from the Lower Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) and 10 minutes away from the Main Terminal of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). It is only 28 minutes from the Kuala Lumpur City Centre via the ERL and a mere 5 minutes from the Sepang F1 Circuit.
The 5,116-acre Bandar Enstek is a joint venture between TH Properties Sdn Bhd and the Negeri Sembilan State Development Corporation (PKNNS). With its own dedicated postcode of 71760 Bandar Enstek, the township offers an extensive network of industrial, commercial, residential and institutional properties supported by first class facilities, amenities and infrastructure.
To date, Bandar Enstek has attracted investments worth more than RM300 million from government bodies and private organisations seeking to establish institutions of higher learning and research, as well as training facilities.
The Ministry of Education and Ministry of Higher Education have purchased 1,000 acres to develop a university and other educational institutions namely Tunku Kursiah College, Institut Aminuddin Baki, Maktab Perguruan Teknik, Institut Pendidikan Bahasa, Akademi Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Pusat Latihan Bahasa Inggeris dan Institut Perpustakaan dan Maklumat Negara. Other government institutions that have developed their facilities at Bandar Enstek include Akademi Audit Negara while the Fire & Rescue Department Malaysia has also confirmed plans to establish its Research and Development centre and training academy in the township.
Bandar Enstek also houses techpark@enstek which is envisaged to become a world-class industrial hub specifically developed to cater for the needs of the Biotechnology, Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and Information Communication Technology (ICT) industries and its sub-sectors. techpark@enstek has the largest cluster of biotechnology operators in the country.
Several local and international organizations, most of which are biotechnology-based, which have or are in the process of setting up operations at Bandar Enstek include Tropical Botanics Sdn Bhd, Stevian Biotechnology, Felda Biotechnology Centre, YHI Manufacturing, Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant (CEPP) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Eden Berhad, Cyclotech Sdn Bhd and Bio-Streptz Sdn Bhd.
techpark@enstek will also see the development of JAKIM's proposed Halal Accreditation Centre and the Health Ministry's Institute of Natural Products, Vaccines and Biologicals (9BIO).
To complement techpark@enstek's businesses, a comprehensive logistics facility known as logispark@enstek, is currently being established to offer integrated logistics support for their operations. Logistics and freight forwarding companies are being invited to operate within this logistics hub, which will have designated free commercial and industrial zones.
A premier international all-girls boarding school, 'Cempaka Ladies' College' (CLC) to be developed by Cempaka Group of Schools will soon be built on a 35-acre land at @enstek.
Bandar Enstek is expected to be completed in the year 2025 with Gross Development Value (GDV) estimated at almost RM9.2 billion.
